Game Ideas & Mechanics

this Week I'm going to be thinking more in the sense of what my game is actually going to include, like mechanics and game content. Due to my game experience all of these games will have an overarching set of mechanics due to traversal like climbing on buildings and momentum to influence how you traverse the level (having a run up will let you jump further). As well as this the various game ideas will have specific mechanics that coincide with the different ideas. From this weeks workshop I honed down my essential experience into a few game Ideas:

  1. Infiltration: Making your way into a specific part of the map (maybe encompasses themes of Stealth mechanics) - I like the idea of this game worlds environment being inaccessible to an ‘average’ person Different mechanics / ideas: -sneaking around guards -Breaking into building -avoiding security systems

  2. Repair/ maintenance: You have get to/ fix broken objects to fix them but they are in hard to reach and strange areas. - the idea that these jobs are so odd and in strange places you’ve been called in to fix them. Different mechanics / ideas: -Repairing objects mini games/ puzzles -repair parts of the environment to traverse -using specific tools for the job (I'm thinking those window cleaner crane things)

  3. Race across an urban environment: This one is pretty self explanatory … - making your own shortcuts to beat opponents would be cool Different mechanics / ideas: -advanced movement like wall-running and vaulting -Racing between ~4 people for single player 2 if multiplayer -maybe some distractible environment (break a makeshift bridge as you go over it)

  4. Runaway: Getting away from pursuers via your ability to traverse the environment - your outnumbered and getting cornered but can still escape. Different mechanics / ideas: -Traps to slow pursuers -escaping enemy NPCs

This task of asking myself what will these games encompass is really useful for deciding what will and won't work as the game I want to make. So from here on I need to look into these mechanics more and research some of the more interesting mechanics that could merge well with my Essential Experience.
